Video Remote Interpretation
When in-person, on-site interpreting services are not immediately available, technology now provides for an interim solution in the form of off-site interpreting services, called Video Remote Interpreting (VRI). VRI works by using videoconferencing technology and equipment to provide the services of a qualified interpreter to people at a different location. For Sign Language interpretation, for example, the interpreter can hear the spoken communication from the service provider (doctor, teacher, etc.), and interprets the message into a signed language for the Deaf or Hard of Hearing client to understand. Likewise, the interpreter takes in the signed message from the client and verbally expresses it to the hearing party in order to facilitate effective, two-way communication.
VRI is typically used when a live, in-person interpreter is not available or not needed. This is especially useful in rural areas where high-quality interpreters are not readily available, or in situations that require quick, straightforward response. Please note that there are some situations in which a remote interpreter is NOT an appropriate choice, such as mental health group sessions and situations in which the clients are not stationary.
