Going to a courthouse in the US for the first time

March 25, 2025

Yes, Your Honor, I am excited to experience simultaneous interpretation for the first time!

As a Certified Translator located in Argentina, I’ve always been curious about the art of interpreting, particularly in the US because our legal systems are so different.

Words can work like a magical spell, but ultimately, it’s teamwork that makes everything come together. A special thanks to the 18th Judicial Circuit Court, Claudia Villalba and her interpreting team for a wonderful experience!

When we entered the courtroom, the interpreter handed us headsets so we could listen to his performance. I was pleasantly surprised by how well-organized everything was! The significance of interpreting services was unmistakable, and I felt a deep sense of gratitude for my colleagues who have tirelessly fought to ensure that this vital service is recognized as a fundamental right for everyone in the courtroom. Understanding one’s rights is essential for all, making the availability of these services crucial for fostering access and equity in the legal system.

When the judge appeared, the action began. The Spanish defendants were ready with their headsets, attentively listening to the judge and learning about the next steps.

I noticed that the judge was aware of the interpretation taking place; he slowed down his pace to give the interpreter enough time to convey all the information to the defendants. This made me realize how much more complex Spanish can be compared to English—interpreters really need to be creative to be concise and quick.

Another thought crossed my mind while listening to the interpreter: What happens if a defendant doesn’t fully understand what the judge is explaining, even with an interpreter’s present? It can be challenging to determine when an interpreter’s role is sufficient and when a lawyer should step in.

As I pondered these questions, the interpreter’s voice brought me back to reality. I realized something I hadn’t considered before: it’s not just the interpreter who plays an important role in that courtroom; both the lawyer and the judge are also crucial parts of the interpreting experience. Every link in this chain is key to get the job done right.

This rewarding experience made me reflect on the importance of teamwork. Understanding each role is vital so that clients know how to proceed, what their rights are, and what steps will follow.

Words can work like a magical spell, but ultimately, it’s teamwork that makes everything come together
